Two days later they arrived in Melbourne, and were settled in a neat and tidy serviced apartment on the South Bank that enjoyed comprehensive views of the Yarra River.

Bree returned to the apartment after a day of browsing the shops, and wondered how Noah had filled his day. Closing the door with her hip, she set her various parcels to the floor—most of them gifts for Tina and Tilly—and pulled an envelope from her handbag.

She frowned, tapping it against her fingers as she waited for the kettle to boil. What on earth had she been thinking? It was totally inappropriate and—

‘What you got there?’

Noah emerged from his bedroom, making her jump.

Worn jeans were slung low on lean hips and a navy T-shirt plastered itself to his chest. With his hair tousled and a faint shadow darkening his jaw he looked like every woman’s vision of the ultimate dreamboat. Yearning rose through her hot and hard, her tongue snaking out to moisten arid lips. He followed the action, his gaze darkening.

They both looked away at the same moment.

Dear God. ‘Oh, nothing.’ She slid the envelope into the back pocket of her jeans before grabbing coffee mugs from the cupboard, but her assumed nonchalance failed when she realised she’d missed her pocket and the envelope fell to the floor instead, landing at Noah’s feet.

Pouncing on it would be too revealing. All she could hope was that he’d hand it back without reading the logo stamped on the front.

His brows shot up the moment he leaned down to pick it up.

No such luck, then.

He pointed to the logo. ‘Doesn’t look like nothing to me.’

She blew out a breath when he handed it back to her. ‘On the spur of the moment I got us tickets to tomorrow’s game.’

Two of the Australian Football League’s most iconic clubs were meeting for what was expected to be one of the clashes of the season at the MCG.

Noah’s entire face lit up.

She’d so wanted to give him a treat to thank him for being so supportive about Tina and Tilly. She’d wanted to find something that would help chase away the shadows that lingered in his eyes.

So he’d made a mistake where Courtney was concerned. She knew what it felt like to make a mistake. He needed to stop beating himself up about it.

She bit back a sigh. ‘But, of course, it was a stupid thing to do and a waste of money.’ She’d bought the tickets on impulse, without considering the wider implications—but she didn’t have to compound her mistake as she had in Sydney.

‘What do you mean? We’re not setting off on the Spirit of Tasmania—’ the overnight ferry that would take them from Port Melbourne to Devonport in Tasmania ‘—until Monday night. There’ll be plenty of time to watch tomorrow’s game. We’ll have all of Monday to pack and do any last-minute shopping.’

‘Time isn’t the problem, Noah. This is going to be one of the biggest games of the year. There’s going to be a lot of media interest in the game.
